Some of you won’t believe I’m writing an entire post on high fives – Peloton friends, I feel the judgy eyes. I can hardly believe this myself! Today I’m writing about high fives from a completely different perspective. Not handing them out with the speed and meaning of a game of Whack-a-Mole, but rather deeply intentional, eyes locked, in the mirror to our selves. Daily.
Peloton High Fives
For those that don’t understand the reference, I’ve been a poo-poo-er of the Peloton High Five feature. The intention is wonderful, but it often turns into a never-ending distraction to keep up with the parade of high fives. Think the early Facebook poke feature. Poke poke poke poke poke – STOP IT!
I went so far as to create a #DNDMODE hashtag and I put a piece of black tape on the screen where the high fives appear. It really got to me when doing FTP tests – I’m clearly testing, do not bother me! #highfivegrump #letmerideinpeace
Does anyone actually high five during a yoga class? Do you see how ridiculous this is?
That is NOT the kind of high five I’m talking about today.
High Five Yourself
When was the last time you greeted yourself in the mirror as you would a friend? With joy, excitement, and anticipation? Do you get up in the morning and rush to greet yourself? Or do you barely want to peek at your raggedy looking saggy baggy face?
What would your best friend say to you at that exact same moment? Mine would give me a high five – with words, encouragement, positivity about all the wonderful things coming up in my day.
Get up right now and go to a mirror and put one up high. Celebrate your badass self! The fact that you are alive is all the reason you need.
How does it feel?
Is it possible to feel anything negative while high-fiving?
The High Five Habit
Mel Robbins, author of The Five Second Rule, has just released a new book, The High Five Habit. Naturally, she has been popping up almost daily as a guest on my favorite podcasts so I’ve had several opportunities to hear her explain the concept, the deeply personal stories behind the book, and give the practice a go myself.
Here are a few good interviews if you’re interested in hearing her share in her own words:
- Good Life Project and Mel Robbins
- The School of Greatness and Mel Robbins
- On Purpose with Jay Shetty and Mel Robbins
High Five Challenge
In the podcasts, Mel say that 80-90% of people will resist entirely. As in, not even try a single time to celebrate themselves. Why? Because they do not feel worthy of the love. Not from others and not from themselves. Period.
Whoah!
To get everyone going, she created a 5-day High Five Challenge. I am among the small group that is totally down with and comfortable high-fiving myself. But I’m also comfortable with the idea of being judged for my body nearly naked on a stage.
In any case, I signed up for her 5-day challenge and am going to do the steps fully. I’m curious – for myself and for sharing with you. Will you join me? It might be FUN!
Here’s one from me.
