Yesterday I mentioned that recovery days keep the hunger alive and that hunger is hustle. What did I mean by that? What exactly is my definition of hustle and how is that different than hurry? Hustle vs hurry, they are wildly different.
Hustle Defined
First, I want to set aside the meanings of hustle that I’m not referring to. The classic dictionary definitions describe negative connotations of rushing, pushing, swindling, etc. This is not where I’m going.
Instead, I’m connecting with the more modern use, in relation to someone “having hustle,” being driven, hungry.
Working hard, with focus, purpose, clear goals, efficiency, personal ruthlessness and integrity, joy, passion, driven by urgency. But no rushing. There’s no waiting around, but there’s also no panicked, scattered hurry. To hustle is to work hard, smart, and with ambition. Hustle is driven by voracious intrinsic motivation. Seeing someone work from this place is unmistakable.
Hurry Defined
Hurry is not at all like hustle. A pressure and quickened pace with the only purpose being a savings of time applied to a goal creates hurry, frenzy, lost focus, potentially chaos. Hurry isn’t about joy, passion, ambition, purpose. Hurry is only about time. Get the thing done by a deadline, no matter what.
Hustle vs Hurry
I keep this huge difference in mind during my gym workouts. As a stay-at-home mom, I have a window in which to get my workouts done. I have a family at home to care for so I can’t dilly dally, yet I also don’t want to rush or bring a hurried energy to my work. I want to make the most of my time, laser focused, efficient, effective – Hustle. No hurry, only hustle.
I keep this in mind with my recovery days. Every part, every choice, is deliberate with the purpose in mind. If an option fits, it is included. If not, it gets bumped to a more appropriate day.
Family Hustle vs Hurry
I consider hustle vs hurry in planning my days as a wife and mom. Do the activities line up efficiently? Can we group outings that are on the same side of town? What can be stacked? How does each part fit in the overall goal?
When we all approach the day with our own levels of hustle, we have more time left to play. We all get the same 24 hours each day, saying good bye to hurry and hello to hustle adds more joy to our lives. Hustle hard, play hard. Go to bed satisfied. Mission accomplished.
Hustle vs hurry, which do you choose?
