O Mason! my mason! your building day is done, The bricks have weathered every task, the prize you sought is won, The creations dear, include a gear, accomplishment abounding, While patient eyes the bins of bricks, the fingers loudly raking; But O brick! brick! brick! O the bins to place each part, Where in your space you build all day, Lego in your heart.
Inspired by Walt Whitman’s “O Captain! My Captain.”
Yesterday my younger son, Mason, and I spent the afternoon photographing his latest Lego builds. While not quite the anchor of taking photographs of my family, I’m thrilled to take photographs for my family, especially to present work like this.
Mommy goggles off, he is a brilliantly creative designer.
Do you remember my reference to what he is doing in the post My “Yes, And”-er? He is studying with Lego Master Aaron Newman, one-on-one, getting the skills and push he needs to become the best he possibly can.
Following in the footsteps of big brother, he started with Duplo and then “big kid bricks” very early and has never looked back. At 6 years old he built the Executor Class Super Star Destroyer all by himself in 7 days.
He is now 13 and designing and building at an adult level, a true mason.
Here is his Flickr page. While he has hundreds of unique builds, he is selective of what he will show. Just know that we have a TON of Legos, complete with a dedicated studio space for him.
Mason, I admire your creativity, dedication, and patience. I hope you keep on living up to your name and bringing joy to every design you create!
