I imagine you have seen the motivational posters that show an iceberg both above and below water, the ones depicting things like “success”. They show success as what is visible above the surface, and things like hard work, sacrifices, and risks as elements beneath the surface – the invisible parts that support the visible success.
This…
Approximately 10% of an iceberg is visible above the surface so this type of imagery is fitting for things like “success”. Think of your own successes – what went into them and how much did the world actually see along the way?
Personal Icebergs
Today I want to flip this imagery a bit, turning it back on ourselves and who we show up as in the world. Who do we present ourselves as? Who does the world perceive us as? How much do we reveal, and of that amount, what are we choosing?
Think about this. We are in our heads 24/7, acutely aware of everything we think and feel. We know ourselves best, all in, inescapably 100%. But, of that 100%, what do we choose to reveal? Can you separate just that portion and repackage it to view alone, to see if you like what you’re presenting?
Is it your best presentation? Is it a true representation, fully embodying the 100% that only you know?
I imagine other people’s stories all the time – a neighbor walking down the street with their dog, an employee in a store I visit regularly, a teacher – people that I see a part of and form an image of based on what is shown. But I wonder what the rest is, because there is always much more. I wish there were time to sit with every person to hear their story, to turn them from a passerby into a deeper connection, to see what is under the surface.
Who do we show up as in this same way? Either by default because we are simply out walking our own dog, or because we choose to conceal?
What if we rolled our icebergs?
What if we consciously chose to reveal different parts of ourselves?
What if we tried on life differently?
What if we chose to show up in more meaningful, impactful ways, not altering who we are but rather pulling from our parts that are below the surface?
We all have so much more to us than we share, 90% below the surface. A rolled iceberg doesn’t look a thing like the tip that is visible. Check it out here. Perhaps in sharing more deeply we can more fully experience life. Remember, gifts require risks, and this is one of them.
What if we helped others roll their icebergs? Maybe in rolling our own, we can encourage others to do the same.
Writing this blog is a massive iceberg shift for me, perhaps totally flipped upside down. And it is one of the most rewarding flips of my life! I’m sending a tidal wave with this flip towards you, so now you’re rolling, too.
You choose what to present to the world – wiggle and roll today, and make it represent you best. Make the 10% that is visible fully represent that 90% that isn’t.
