In an effort to improve my sleep, I’ve spent the last couple of weeks digging into sleep resources, learning as much as I can. Of course, I have needed several nights to sleep on it all before sharing, but now I’m ready. Here we go, it is time for Sleep Week! My research has taught me more than I ever knew was available on a single topic – holy cow, sleep is complex and fascinating!
I’m going to share my resources for you to explore on your own, and please do. I have found these to be the most important and impactful pieces of learning possibly in my entire life. Reading and learning alone already has improved my sleep without doing anything else. Captain Kirk is wrong, SLEEP is the final frontier!
Why We Sleep
One of the first steps for understanding and appreciating anything more fully is to understand WHY. Think about it. From toddlerhood we begin to ask WHY about almost everything. Whenever someone asks us to do something, we want to know why, and then once we understand, we are much more willing and invested in whatever it is. Yes?
With sleep, I don’t know that anyone has ever taught us WHY. We all simply sleep, knowing we must. We know we feel better with it, terrible without it, maybe some general things like REM and non-REM sleep, blah blah blah. But is that enough? That’s like a 5-star chef only knowing how to make a PBJ sandwich. Sleep is our Superpower, our number one pillar of health – we all ought to dig in more deeply and learn more about how it works and why.
I’m absolutely delivering a SHOULD. YES.
Matthew Walker, PhD.
Matt Walker is my new superhero. He is a sleep scientist and expert on sleep. His book Why We Sleep is the most informative book I have ever read, one that I want to purchase 150 copies of to share with my entire Dunbar Circle of friends. The N.Y. Times deemed it “essential reading” and I 100% agree. If you are alive and capable of reading, this book must be read. I’m going to reference it quite a bit this week.
Sleep is Your Superpower
