While I’m waiting for more clarity on my doctor visit and options (we’re reconvening later this week), let’s talk about glitter. Seriously. Because, doesn’t glitter seem to fix so many things?
I know it is abhorred by so many parents and teachers – it seems to stick to everything and propagate, sometimes entirely new species are born, and, like Twinkies, it lives forever. But, dang, find me a person that doesn’t smile or feel even a hint of joy when they see glitter. It is like magic, taking anything you put it on from eh, to WOW!
Glitter is Magical
Did you know it also has magical properties? It is true. Just yesterday my daughter and I went on a trip to Michael’s for supplies for four different projects. One of them was to make an anti-spider spray for her room, to be applied just before bed. The solution for such a spray includes glitter, of course! Fact – spiders are terrified of glitter. The more you know.
She needed a middle of the night re-application, but just one. That’s much better than the multiple times per night freakouts of late.
Glitter is Delicious
Edible glitter makes everything taste better. We use Sparkle Syrup at our house. If you’re SUPER lucky, you can even get yours with a magic wand! (These syrups are actually amazing. I highly recommend them, especially sparkle.)
70’s Glitter
Whatever happened to car, motorcycle, and helmet paints from the 70s? All that color and glitter! I think people were happier back then – maybe we need to bring back all that sparkle and shine!
I would paint my car like this:
Personal Glitter
Even I turn to a glitter fix when I need a boost. A glittery scrunchie for my hair. A glittery hair clip. Glittery unicorn underpants. A glitter topcoat for my pedicure. I feel like I am 12 years old and it is awesome! Bling bling boom!
I have several series of glitter and bokeh photography overlays. They are so fun to apply to images when I want more sparkle or visual interest. Sometimes I just shoot water droplets, I love the effect so much. The image at the top of this post is water sprayed on my black countertop, backlit by hard morning sun, shot with a macro lens with a shallow depth of field. No overlays added, water is its own glitter. Shooting images like this is fun and the results are always a surprise!
Natural Glitter
Nature loves glitter, too. When is the snow the most beautiful? Those mornings when there is a fresh layer that sparkles in the sun, of course. Snow glitter!
Have you ever been hiking on a trail and noticed little shimmery bits in the dirt? That’s mica, a reflective mineral. Dirt glitter!
Stars are nighttime sky glitter!
Adult Glitter
The purpose of glitter is to add shimmer, shine, sparkle, and color. Guess what? There are so many other things that we all are attracted to that add shimmer, shine, sparkle, and color to our lives. Let’s call it Adult Glitter. Do you like a string of holiday lights or an entire display? Tell me you don’t like beauty like Longwood Gardens at Christmas! <– Play that link for a glitter fix! How about city lights at night? Or a string of pretty patio lights on a Summer night?
Fireworks are sky glitter. Who doesn’t like to see fireworks?
How about a piece of jewelry or pop of makeup? Feeling meh? Some shiny lip gloss or eye-shadow turns things right around. It doesn’t require a bath of body glitter, just a tiny bit. Glitter is powerful stuff, even in adult form!
So there we have it. My non-scientific assessment of the power of glitter and why we could all use more of it in our lives.
It fixes so many things, most of all our attitude.
I’m going to bring some sort of glittery thing to share on our Hope Pass hike tomorrow. Not that we need it, but just in case, and because it is FUN!
Order for the day – go try the glitter fix!
