Uncertainty is typically regarded as a negative. We love to know things and have control over situations. Certainty feels comfortable. Uncertainty feels ignorant. I want to flip it all upside down today…
New Point Of View
Try this perspective on: Uncertainty is a form of hope because with not knowing we have room to imagine, wish, and aspire. There is room for possibilities that don’t live in certainty. Can you get comfortable with the discomfort of uncertainty and see it that way?
Uncertainty is also where we learn. These last three years for me have been filled with uncertainty.
- Will this work?
- When will I heal?
- WILL I ever heal?
This very uncertainty has led me to look at everything through multiple lenses from a variety of angles. In the process, I’ve learned more about myself than any other time in life. Uncertainty is a gift!
Uncertainty leads to exploration.
Certainty is stagnant.
Uncertainty leads to reframing, looking for the good, or purpose, in whatever it is.
Certainty is false, for the only real certainty in life is uncertainty.
Uncertainty has momentum, room for growth, excitement, development, possibility.
Even quantum physics isn’t certain.
The Uncertainty Principle
“Introduced first in 1927 by the German physicist Werner Heisenberg, the uncertainty principle states that the more precisely the position of some particle is determined, the less precisely its momentum can be predicted from initial conditions, and vice versa.“
Think about that.
Now apply it to everything in life. Decisions. Feelings. Comfort. If you have certainty in your decision or feeling, you cannot know it’s momentum or direction. You can’t know both at the same time.
Certainty can only exist in a single moment. Are you satisfied to sit in only that single moment in order to have momentary comfort followed by inevitable disappointment? Or, can you let it go and embrace the excitement, change, and opportunities that lie within uncertainty?
I’m choosing to get comfortable being uncomfortable in every aspect of life and embracing uncertainty for the gift that it is. Everything in the Universe is in constant motion, always changing, ever uncertain. There is beauty in that, and it is a gift if we allow ourselves to go with the flow of it.
