Welcome to Day 4 of the Habits Reboot week. If you missed Days 1, 2, and 3, please go back and start there. Today we are switching gears into two days of creating space by letting go, starting with easier tasks today and then growing into more challenging, yet more rewarding endeavors tomorrow. In under 60 minutes we can all work through these 60 ways to create space.
These ideas are inspired by, and some borrowed from, Courtney Carver, author of Project 333 and Soulful Simplicity. Feel free to modify these to suit your life best as I have for mine.
Are you entertaining elephants? Is that what you want?
The last three days we’ve worked on setting up spaces we love and ditching a few bad habits. Today we are going to move into clearing and creating space – physically and mentally. Today we are going to look at things we have become blind to and making some effective changes. Today we are going to say good bye to things that no longer serve us so we can either make space for new things that will, OR keep the space free and clear. Today we are going to begin to free ourselves from elephant keepers and elephants.
10 Expectations from Others
I’m starting with a difficult one so you can ponder it while you work through the rest. Write these down as you go – 10 expectations from others that you can let go of. Expectations and the need for control – let it go and channel it into yourself instead.
10 UFOs
Now, go to your car and clean out the UFOs. A clean car is not only more enjoyable but UFOs are actually a safety issue. Look at everything in your car and imagine what would happen if you were to get into a crash. What would fly around and potentially injure yourself and passengers? If its a UFO it’s got to go! Make space for safety.
Let’s go to the kitchen…
10 Cold Things
Whenever I bring home new groceries, it seems I have to take time to clear out old items before I can put the new ones away. There are too many rarely used/never used items that have piled up. Time to get rid of those! Open the fridge and freezer and toss 10 condiments, back corner things, stuff nobody has eaten and surely has freezer burn. Make it 20 if you want! Make room for fresh food.
10 Pantry Items
Do the same thing in the pantry. Look for the things you’ve become blind to because they’ve been there for so long. Maybe some random ingredient you used for one thing once upon a time, or that time you thought you’d try something new but didn’t like it yet couldn’t bring yourself to toss it “because it’s still good.” Let those things go! No matter how often I redo my pantry, I always seem to be able to nearly fill an entire garbage bag. Make room for new, different foods. And if they don’t work out, let those go, too.
10 Spices
Old Spice and old spices. Just say no. Pick 10 (or more) and say goodbye. Make room for new flavors in your life.
10 Supplements/Medications
Do you actually use them all? Have they expired? Go check them all and toss what is old. Replace what you actually use and let the rest go.
Are you still thinking about the expectations from others that you can let go of? That is the hardest one so commit to finishing that list and following through. Tomorrow I will share more ways to create space and they will be more difficult. Make space for them and they will help you make space for what really matters most in your life.
