“It’s all about the journey.” That sounds so cliché, to the point where we no longer stop to realize the depth of the statement. Maybe we are all so busy hustling towards destinations that we don’t even want to consider the joy of the journey, forget about the triteness.
But, what if we did consider the journey? What if the destination is the journey? What if flipping it around brought exponentially more joy and satisfaction than the rush to simply arrive?
Take Off the Blinders
We put blinders on horses so they stay on track, don’t get distracted or spooked, and stay focused on the destination. But, we are not horses. We are capable of heading towards a goal while also stopping to smell the flowers, explore, learn. See and savor every part along the way. Both deeply and broadly, whatever floats our boat.
I mean, for real?
I get it. We are driven to achieve. More, more, more. Better, faster, compete, perform, hit quotas. GO! But what if by taking the blinders off and enjoying the ride we actually end up performing even better, thanks to deeper satisfaction? And then we are self-motivated to do even better the next time, or to even have a next time at all?
It’s All About the Journey
Here are the ways I’ve been enjoying a few of my various journeys. Maybe something here will apply to you.
Parenting
This is a journey if there ever was one. Who has kids and then spends 18 years laser focused on the result? Don’t we naturally savor the journey? This may be the best model for journeying there is. When in doubt on How To Journey, look at parenting – either your own or those around you if you don’t have kids.
Surgery Recovery
Who enjoys that? Well, I do! I have gratitude for the gifts it is bringing me. Not only the final result, the purpose of the surgeries, but the discoveries along the way. I’m growing as a person. I’m learning new skills. I’ve healed old relationship wounds. This has been the most impactful three years of my life, all because I’ve chosen to lean into what I’ve been given. This is way more than physical surgery recovery – but only because I’ve chosen to make it so.
Running
Running takes a person from Point A to Point B. Truth. Most people want to get it over with as quickly as possible, entirely focused on the destination or the feeling of having gotten it done. It isn’t until it is flipped into a Journey Event that it is enjoyed. Once it becomes a personal journey, a whole new world opens up and the journey becomes the destination. People have asked me over the years how on earth (and why) I would run 100+ miles. It is for the journey, and the longer the better, more interesting, more surprising, and thrilling. It is exciting to see what will unfold along the way.
Bodybuilding
This is a multifaceted sport offering me endless opportunities to go both broad and deep with my journey. 24/7, there is something for me to delight in. The obvious workouts and body transformation, yes, but there is also the food, psychology, confidence, posing, presentation, bikinis, jewelry, heels, tans, learning about hair and makeup…so many directions to travel and enjoy!
One Percent Daily
It goes back to the One Percent Rule. One percent improvement every single day will compound into success over time. How can the one percent be measured in meaningful ways that spark positivity and embrace self-love?
#BUILDMORETHANJUSTABODY
Celeste, you’ve got it going on! Body changes take a long time and a lot of consistent effort. It is so easy to get frustrated with wanting changes to happen right now and not having that be so. Anger, resentment, total self-disgust, and negativity can rule the day until the goal is achieved. But why? You and you work are shining examples of how to enjoy every step of the way filled with gratitude and fun.

Makeup Madame
Yesterday I had a 3+ hour makeup lesson with Lindsay Ambrosio. Holy heck, she is outstanding! Her galleries speak for themselves, but to be able to teach that through a virtual meeting online to someone like me that wears lip balm and the tiniest bit of daily makeup – that’s a gift! I had always wanted to learn to do my own makeup. Check out what she helped me do:
Enjoying the Journey
THIS is enjoying the journey. As an aspiring competitive bodybuilder I could be narrowly focused on the food, workouts, and metrics (weight, hip and waist measurements) but how NOT fun would that be? Hurry up and get there? No thanks! There are so many fun elements along the way that also add to the 1% that also matter. For me, it’s all about the journey.
And with the savoring of the journey, the destination will be all the sweeter, bolstered by layers of meaning and backed by days of enjoyment. A true cherry on top of the best multi-layered cake I’ve ever made.
The best experiences in life can be ruined by bad relationships. Think about that. Just like an amazing vacation can be ruined by fighting with family, our life experiences can be ruined by poor relationships with ourselves.
What Is Your Journey?
How about you? What are you pushing for while wearing blinders? Can you take them off and see the whole picture? What are the other pieces of the daily one percent? How can you shift it so you can truly say “it’s all about the journey”?
