Yesterday we went to Meow Wolf, newly opened in Denver. The original is in Santa Fe and the second is in Las Vegas. Now that I have had a night to sleep on it, I’m left with the incredible challenge of articulating in words what is truly an experience unlike anything else. Ever.
What is Meow Wolf?
In short, it is an art collective. Galleries that flow one into another created by all sorts of unique artist that work without boundaries. It originated in Santa Fe as a way for underground and artists on the fringes to be able to create and fully express themselves. No rules.
Here is the trailer to the full documentary of the origin story.
The Experience
We went knowing it would be cool and different, but that’s about it. Purposely, the website doesn’t show the essence of the experience. They don’t even have a map once you’re inside.
We all agreed that it was transformative and one of the most impactful experiences we’ve ever had. It felt like I was walking through incredible dreamscapes, immersed in things and sounds that would only appear in dreams, yet within a conscious mind and body. This sensation caused me to feel like there was a new combinations of senses happening that I had never experienced before, synergizing into an entirely new sense, awakening a whole new part of my brain. I know that sounds bizarre but that is the only way I can describe it.
Transformative Art
In reality, it is a trip through the creative minds of the artists, a physical tour, but since each gallery is from different artists and the viewer takes their own unique trip, randomly moving from space to space, artist to artist, with no planned path, each person’s experience will be different as the collective melds in unique ways. Add to it our own previous life experiences from which we draw and interpret our world, and it results in no two people experiencing Meow Wolf the same way.
It was interesting to notice that everyone else there seemed to be experiencing the same awakening. The pace at which we all moved, humming from one space to the next at nearly identical paces – moving moving moving for more more more, feed the newly awake center in our brains. It is almost as if the participants are part of the art. The looks of absorbing awe yet no spoken words. How does one assign words to an entirely new sense without diminishing it?
After about an hour or so, we were suddenly saturated and needed to come up for air. It felt as if my new whatever-it-is sense had absorbed all it could and needed to take a nap to process it all.
I almost hate to share the only clip I took because not even an entire gallery can illustrate the experience. It is multi-sensory and enormous and must be experienced in order to understand. But, here you go…
Meow Wolf is a Gift
Broken down, it is a collection of scraps of trash, odd items, simply stuff… but put together as it is, it is a gift! An awakening of the existing senses and new ones. The artists have achieved their goal of showing the world a new kind of art.
Meow Wolf Tips
All I can say is go. It would do it a disservice if I tried to tell you what to expect, so just go. Bring the entire family. Immerse yourself. I’ love to hear your thoughts afterwards, if you’re able to find words.
