Yesterday afternoon we went on a family hike, seeking to absorb every last minute of warm, Fall sunshine before what promises to be a wicked Winter sets in. Halloween has historically been The Day that Winter arrives each year so we are almost there. We went to a nearby Open Space park, a fave for unicorn hunts and rock climbing. I asked Mason to show me the way to the tippy top of a giant rock structure that I had never summited before but had always wanted to. Yes! Let’s go, it’s climb time!
History
We moved to our home in 2012 and started coming to this park right away. I watched Lucas figure this particular climb out over time, then he taught Mason, and now Willa is trying to find her way up. Yet, I had never had the right moment to climb this particular structure.
- 2012 – I was too busy running the trails to stop and climb
- 2013 – Racing
- 2014 – Bilateral ankle reconstructions
- 2015 – Pregnancy and baby
- 2016 – Baby
- 2017 – Baby
- 2018 – The beginning of 11 hip and pelvis surgeries
- 2019 – Surgeries #3-7
- 2020 – Surgeries #8-10
- 2021 – Surgery #11
What the fork. It was time to climb that thing!
It is a simple scramble to climb, but I was never mobile enough to go all the way up except for when I was “too busy” back in 2012-13. My boys asked me to join them back then – how I wish I would have! “Another day” was always my reply. This is a huge reminder to me to grab opportunities when they arise because you never know if/when they will come again.
This outing was a delicious reminder to savor every moment, every opportunity, and to continue to say YES to more things that are outside of my original thinking.
Climb Time
Mason, thank you for showing me the way. The way to climb but also the way to be. The way up AND the way down. The way to face and the way to embrace. With this climb I feel a new inner stillness.
