After landing on show dates a couple of weeks ago (we’ve added a warm-up show!), my target immediately became “how to make the most of every day between now and then.” I want every day of my workouts, nutrition, recovery, posing practice, all of it to be maximized, fully encompassing the one percent rule. This has meant digging deeper with my research on products, science, sleep, everything I can get my hands on – can you imagine my nerded out bliss? I love this stuff! And now I’m going to begin to share my findings so you can benefit like I am. Starting from the ground up, just as every good foundation should, let’s get grounded!
Note – David and I love this product line so much that we joined their affiliate program. I would be sharing this with you regardless, but will always disclose when this is the case.
Grounding aka Earthing
Grounding is the extremely simple act of connecting with the earth. As in, slip off your shoes and socks and stand on the ground, grass, beach, etc. Skin to earth. Just as our ancestors did for ever and ever until we insulated ourselves with shoes, houses, beds, cars, rubber playgrounds, artificial turf, plastics of every kind, etc.
Think about it…how much time do you spend each day in direct contact with the earth? Skin to earth?
That was my answer. I like being outside, but none of that time is spent touching the earth. Even during my years of ultrarunning, I was completely insulated thanks to my synthetic foam/rubber running shoes. Sure, I felt mentally/emotionally connected to nature, gained the benefits of fresh air and sunshine, but I wasn’t physically connected to the earth.
Electrons
So what’s the big deal? Electrons! The earth is negatively charged, covered in electrons. When we connect with the earth we absorb the free electrons. We need them for our health.
“The electrons you absorb when grounding neutralize free radical damage; squelch inflammation; restore healthy endocrine function; enhance cellular gating and circulation, which improves cellular uptake of nutrients, oxygen and hormones while maximizing the removal of cellular waste — the list goes on and on.
Clinical research has shown that therapeutically and for overall health and wellbeing, the most important time to ground is when you sleep.”
Grounding Science
Grounding is more than a spiritual practice, it is an actual proven physical science with profound benefits for our health. This helps to explain so much of what has gone wrong with out health since the advent of products that insulate us. Here is some research to back this up. And more here.
And two short film to help explain this better than I can.
We Are Grounded
You know how picky I am when it comes to new products, claims, etc. At first glance, I closed the page on this one, too. But then I watched the full film and took a closer look.
And I still have this one to watch:
David and I decided to give it a try. What did we have to lose? So, we purchased two Ground Therapy Sleep Mats and two Ground Therapy Pillowcases and have been sleeping on them every night for a week now.
Results?
All I can say is, WOW, what a difference! I feel like my whole body pauses so the internal chaos calms and my cells synchronize. Think of an orchestra warming up before a performance – you hear a cacophony of individually beautiful but disorganized sounds. This is me being ungrounded. Then when the performance starts all of the sounds synchronize, harmonize, and synergize. This is me being grounded.
My sleep has been more organized and efficient. All of my workouts have been stronger than ever, seemingly powered by jet fuel. My gut health is the best it has ever been, thanks to decreasing inflammation. And perhaps best of all, my nighttime pain from my surgeries DOES NOT BOTHER ME AT ALL.
David has no nighttime body pain and is waking up with far less inflammation that normally causes a lot of breathing issues. According to his Oura Ring, his REM sleep has increased by 18%.
Sleeping grounded on an indoor grounding device has been shown to…
- reduce pain and inflammation
- improve sleep, metabolism, cellular function, HRV and vagal tone
- decrease cortisol, stress, anxiety and depression
- improve circulation, blood pressure, blood viscosity and blood glucose levels
- up-regulate energy, performance, recovery and wound healing
- improve mood, thyroid function, other hormonal production and immunity
Always choosing me as his favorite person, my cat wants to curl up on the mat and pillowcase with me more than ever. Animals are smart this way. Our dogs are enjoying David’s mat and pillowcase, too.
Go Get Grounded
OK, your turn. Are you inspired to give it a try? It is as simple as sleeping on a mat. You have to sleep, anyway! It plugs directly into the ground of an outlet OR into a grounding stake outside if you prefer. SO SIMPLE, as often the best solutions are.
We are going to add these to our kids’ beds and watch the effects it will have on them. I’ll share the results, but in the meantime I would love to hear yours!
