Today I’m sharing another one of my new secret weapons. This one is part of my mornings, my new pre-workout rocket fuel. I wake up grounded every morning and then move on to bathing my cells in the best nutrients possible. A lot of people like to get jacked up on stimulant-laden pre-workout drinks but those leave me feeling jittery, itchy, and generally weird. Yuck! Until now! I’ve landed on something AWESOME that I have to share, and again it is something simple – EAAs, aka essential amino acids.
EAAs
Briefly, essential amino acids are amino acids that our bodies cannot make themselves, therefore we must get them from outside sources.
- Phenylanine
- Valine
- Threonine
- Tryptophan
- Isoleucine
- Methionine
- Histidine
- Arginine
- Leucine
- Lysine
We need all of these, but until recently, people have been taking the BCAAs in isolation thinking that was all that was necessary for better results in the gym. *Raises Hand* That’s what I was taught, too. It is time to think again!
EAAs and BCAAs
“Not all amino acids are created equal. Branched-chain amino acid supplements (BCAAs) contain only three of the nine essential amino acids (EAAs) that the body can’t make itself: leucine, isoleucine, and valine. People take BCAAs hoping to stimulate muscle protein synthesis, fight fatigue, and increase focus during workouts. Unfortunately, these claims about the benefits of BCAAs are primarily based on 2006 studies done on rats. Since then, additional studies have shown that in humans, BCAAs have no effect on muscle growth and may cause a spike in blood glucose or insulin, along with an imbalance of the more important EAAs.
In contrast, supplements that contain the correct balance of all nine EAAs—which are more expensive than BCAAs but far more efficacious—have been shown to improve the retention of lean muscle, increase metabolic rate, and optimize brain and liver function, with no deleterious side effects and a very low calorie load.
Sure, you could simply eat a steak or suck down a whey protein shake to “get all your EAAs, but the protein from food must first be digested and then broken down into amino acids, so food-derived amino acids not only come with far more calories than EAA capsules or powders but also take longer to be absorbed. It’s also difficult to eat real food during, say, a workout or race. (Ever try to chew through a few hard-boiled eggs while weight training or gnaw on a chicken breast during a hot afternoon run?)”

BCAAs
For months, my coach had me using BCAAs as part of my pre-workout blend. They are bitter so I’d always have to blend it with something else to help mask the flavor, typically a stimulant-light pre-workout drink. I never noticed any benefits but continued because “it must be doing something.” But now that I’ve done my own research, I can see that it probably wasn’t doing much of anything.
Here are some excellent reads for deeper information:
Kion EAAs = Rocket Fuel
While most EAAs are not balanced and taste absolutely terrible, Kion’s brand new formula is perfect. The proportions are correct, the taste is great, and there are no weird fillers. I am PICKY about this stuff so to pass my test is a big deal!
This is true rocket fuel! My workouts are stronger than ever with my weights going up at a much faster pace, workout by workout. I’m excited for my coach to notice the increased pace and ask what I’m up to because it is undeniably obvious! Why on earth would I want to continue with products that don’t offer the best benefit? Good bye bitter BCAAs, hello EAAs!
EAAs = Swiss Army Knife
Here’s the extra plus – EAAs do much more than give a pre-workout boost. They also aid in recovery, sleep, digestion, metabolism, immune function, and a whole lot more. Read How To Use Amino Acids for the latest and greatest on all of the benefits.
Ok, go! Please try it. I am SO CURIOUS to know your results. Get grounded and fuel your cells. Tomorrow I’ll add more to my stack of secret weapons. There’s more to come!
