Yesterday was a hugely productive day at our house. Two days post-Thanksgiving, a great day to work on making turkey soup, set up the Christmas tree, massively clean the house – sort through toys, rearrange things, reorder the pantry, wash fridge shelves while Tetris-style making room for larger containers, washing barf-covered bedding. You know, fairly typical stuff. Even with the annoyances along the way, we did it with gratitude for all that we have and are able to do, and at the end exclaimed – We Done Did It, a phrase that is more than the physical acts of doing. It includes deep gratitude for each part.
I took some photos along the way. They are all phone images so please pardon the poor quality. I’ll spare you the yucky bedding…
Turkey Carcass Soup
Pete the turkey was delicious so we all agreed he needed to be a soup, too. So, starting in the morning I made the broth from what was left of him and then we had a delicious dinner. I’m grateful that we could make and share this meal together and make the most of Pete.
House Cleaning
Before we could set up the Christmas tree and decorate the house, I asked everyone to do some major cleaning, toy pick up and sorting, furniture reorganizing – while I tore apart and washed my child barfed-in bed. This resulted in a lot of grumbles but in the end we have clean open spaces and I got a fresh clean, fluffy bed to sleep in. Toys are where they belong and my house looks like a home rather than a toy chest that exploded. I’m grateful for my family taking the time to do this with me and that we have so much that this is even a thing.
Christmas Tree
With clean spaces, it is much easier to decorate and have fun!
And for 9 years we have been collecting resin family ornaments. We have been in Colorado for 10 Christmases but we didn’t find these until 2013.
Here’s our tree complete with crooked star on top. Mason thinks it gives it character. I’m grateful that we have the luxury of a tree and more ornaments than I can use, most being gifts that the kids made in school over the years. Seeing their preschool faces glued onto pieces of macaroni is pure joy.
Active Recovery Day
Saturdays are my recovery days, which means Move In Gentler Ways. I did a late morning yoga that was delicious and along the way thought about how grateful I am to be able to do it. There are so many people that not only don’t have access but also don’t have the ability. Each time I ran into my own limitations, I smiled in gratitude for all that I am able to do.
Bookending my active recovery movement, I went for a late afternoon walk. iPhone cameras have terrible dynamic range, but this was the gift in the sky for me.
I’m grateful for where we live and the beauty around us and that I have the freedom to roam and enjoy it.
We Done Did It
Last night after all was done and cleaned up, Mason and I reflected on our day. All that we accomplished, how beautiful the house looks now, and definitely agreed that we done did it. I am grateful for the day, my family, and can’t wait to see what today holds for all of us. Everything is better when there is gratitude involved.
