Welcome to December and Day 1 of Project 31! I’m starting mine out with a series of photos and a story about King Tone of Brussels. He was developed by Mason but one part dates back nearly 15 years – there’s rich history here. Read on for the full story…
Panettone
I have been buying Panettone during the holidays for about 15 years. They are squishy and yummy, the fruit pieces are soft, and they actually get eaten, unlike the one and only fruitcake in the world. Anyone remember this?
Panettone Hats
The boxes make the best hats. My boys have stuck them on their heads in various ways over the years, but nobody has made it an art form like Mason has. They are typically battle helmets of some sort, but no two are ever the same.
A Google search for Panettone hats shows basically nothing. How is this not a thing? This guy gets it. Bravo, Box Hat Guy!
Brussels Sprouts
I’m a huge fan of Brussels sprouts! They are sort of the outcast of the vegetable world, similar to the traditional fruitcake. But not for me! I have even pulled them into my daily vernacular as a Thing. The best is when I can buy them right on the stalk, aka “club.”
The Knight Of Brussels
Five years ago, almost to the day, Mason and I came home from Whole Foods and on a whim he married a new Panettone box hat with my brand new sprout club. I was taking an off camera flash photography class at the time so a project and series of photos was born along with the Knight of Brussels.
King Tone of Brussels
A few days ago we were again at Whole Foods and Mason saw both a stack of Panettones and fresh sprout clubs so he grabbed one of each, insisting that we redo the photos. YES! YES YES YES!
Never to be boring or same same, he upped his game this time. There’s a second tier to the crown, a second mini Panettone box. Also, he added in the burnouse that my sister gifted to Lucas when he was five or six, purchased at the Tatooine Star Wars set in Tunisia when she and her family lived there. (King Tone’s attire is steeped in rich family history.) And, of course, shades to top it off. He has grown and evolved from Knight to KING!
For this action series imagine a mighty RAWR, because you have to make the sound while clubbing, even if it is just for photos.
We aren’t sure what King Tone of Brussels’ dominion is like, other than my driveway right next to the trash bins. But he is a special member of our family and holiday tradition that I’m SURE no other family has. Once Google has crawled this page, I bet it I will be the top hit for the search “King Tone of Brussels.”
Happy December to you! May this month be full of fun, memory making, and photographs that become heirlooms.
All hail King Tone of Brussels! You’re the best dressed and most creative King I know!

I love the tonight show clip. Very funny. I also love that Manson can have fun with making a character and really selling it. I’ve always believed it’s so important to have fun and laugh at yourself. Good for you Mason
