Sometimes I am asked if my entire hip and pelvis journey has been worth it. It has been a LOT so this question makes sense. Sometimes I ask the same question of myself, especially on days/weeks/months that progress seems to stagnate and even go backwards – periods where I lose ROM and pain increases. Is it worth it? What is the cost benefit if I’m moving sideways or backwards?
Big Picture
I’ve always been invested in the zoomed out, big picture, long term results, as in high quality of life for the rest of my life. That is my ultimate goal. Doing all this work may give a seemingly endless parade of shorter term setbacks, but the big picture scope is the goal. Living the rest of my life with these hips, aka no replacements, no limits – that’s the ultimate goal.
How Much Could I Lose?
This is a question that should not only be asked, but deeply explored when considering something along the lines of all the work I’ve done. I’ve been quicker than most in coming to my answers, perhaps hasty in some eyes, but that’s how I function.
Here’s a breakdown from James Clear:
It is definitely about a lot more than money. I’d also add:
- How much ability could I lose?
- How many moments, especially with young kids, could I lose?
How Much Could I Gain?
On the flip side, how much could I gain?
- How much time could I gain?
- How much sanity could I gain?
- How much happiness could I gain?
- How much ability could I gain?
- How many moments could I gain?
Cost Benefit
Where do the chips fall? Obviously, there are too many unknowns to have a perfect answer, but this process should offer some clarity. That, plus trusting your gut.
My Cost Benefit
I have lived most of the cost, but I haven’t yet realized the benefit. Not by a long shot. So, until we get it, I’m continuing on. It is IN THERE, we simply have to keep going. I’m willing to continue to pay. No regrets. Sideways, backwards – it is all part of my process.
