I spent yesterday in the car driving across two states, plenty of time to dig into a backlog of podcasts. I ended the day halfway through a 6-part series from Brené Brown and her twin sisters, a 6-week dive into Brené’s first book, The Gifts of Imperfection. This is one of my favorites from her. In celebration of the 10th anniversary re-release, the three of them revisit each part, retest themselves, and invite us to join.
So… let’s go!
The Gifts of Imperfection
In its simplest form, this book is about wholehearted living – letting go of perfection in favor of living authentically. Of course, there is much more to it than that…
In the podcast, Brené describes perfectionism as “never getting enough of what you don’t need.” I’m still rumbling on that one, taking stock of my own penchant for perfectionism, trying to apply that idea and find agreement/disagreement. What do you think of that idea?
In light of the idea of our imperfections being gifts, if I cast aside the chase for perfection and instead embrace the beauty of the imperfections, it has merit.
Wholehearted Inventory
The first part of getting the most from this book is to do a personal inventory – the Wholehearted Inventory. <— CLICK THIS LINK The book won’t hold as much meaning without having done that first, so don’t skip it!
I did this for the first time last December so I was due for a new look at myself. My new results compared to the first are similar, with some staying about the same and some improving. I’ll take it!
10 Guideposts
In the book, Brené introduces 10 guideposts for wholehearted living. These correspond with the elements in the Wholehearted Inventory.

I’m happy I saved this series for a time like now, during a long trip. Their conversations are intense! Brené alone is incredible, but adding in her sisters takes it to a whole new level. It is fascinating to listen to them dig deeply into themselves while also guiding the listener through their own deep dive.
I’ll be back in the car for the long return trip home tomorrow so I’ll finish the series. In the meantime, dig in! Take the inventory, read the book, see what you learn about yourself!
