It is an incredible week in our family, full of huge changes happening all at once. Most of it is going beautifully, but, naturally, there are some bumps. Change is sometimes messy, but change is growth, and that is what we are ultimately after. Some refer to this as Growing Pains, but tagging onto yesterday’s sentiment of speaking in the affirmative, I’m flipping the concept of Growing Pains onto its head and calling them Growing Gains.
Our family of 5 is now living in three locations, playing musical chairs through the week at two of the three locations. It is all by choice and an incredibly beautiful opportunity for everyone, but the Growing Gains are in abundance and a lot to process all at once.
College At Last
Yesterday we got Lucas moved into college. What an incredible end to a crazy season in life! The last few months of his High School career were interrupted by the beginning of COVID which led into a gap year and an almost alternate reality, not in line with his intended life path. While there was plenty of good during the time off, it was aslant. Getting him moved in and back on course was a beautiful ending and a new beginning, definitely a piece of Growing Gains. He’s entering into a season of a whole new set of challenges, but has the full support of his new college world to support him.
Teenage Gains
In the middle, Mason is growing physically larger so fast! But beyond that, we are working through how to structure his year with Lego design, mentoring, new math studies, writing, archery, and who knows what else. There are some Growing Pains in the form of pushback that we need to channel into Growing Gains. His plan is a WIP, where my attention is going next. In the meantime, we are working on documenting the largest build of his life. Here is a sneak peek, forward momentum…
Rainbow Treehouse and Farm Gains
Willa is set and off and running at her farm school. And our second home, The Rainbow Treehouse, is set up. Her world is beautiful! Her Growing Gains come in the form of learning to interact with other kids better and how to talk to everyone with kinder words.
Bodybuilding Gains
I’m connected with my coach again after all these months off and we have a plan in place. I’m pushing hard into my new workouts, deliciously, perfectly sore. I’ve added a new gym right next to The Rainbow Treehouse for farm school days. And I’ve got a new food plan. I’m excited to literally GAIN – muscle, body fat, strength, confidence.
Relationship Gains
Can you imagine what all of this sort of new juggling does to a relationship? As the foundation of our family, this is is the most important area of Growing Gains of all. We have our own Growing Gains to make together to support our new shared goals. We already have an excellent foundation of supporting each other fully in our unique goals, but with these shifts it is time to realign and be our very best together. These changes are ultimately going to make us even better. I’m excited to see where we go!
Growth = Change = Gains
Your Turn
Where in your life do you have change happening? Are there Growing Pains associated with it that perhaps are even causing you to resist the change in some way? What happens when you flip them into Growing Gains? Can you embrace them and dig in wholeheartedly?
