My dad is here for a visit so today’s post is short and sweet – I want to spend as much time with him as possible and he with us. Like Thoreau, we want to “suck out all the marrow of life,” especially on rare days like this. We haven’t gotten to visit since 2019 and this is a less than 24-your stop for him.
Live deliberately
“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms…”
– Henry David Thoreau, Walden
Be in the present moment
My dad is on a two-week solo trip through 9-10 states, stops plotted all along the way to visit with family and friends. He and I tried to count up how many people and it is too many to keep track of, incredibly impressive! He felt the urge to visit everyone after being grounded for so long due to Covid, and he’s feeling the ticking of time as people age and new generations sprout up. Memento Mori. It is beautiful to see this deep drive to immerse himself in the treasure of people and love, to suck the marrow of life.
Suck the Marrow
And with that, I urge you to go do the same. I’m going to go help wash the 8273452374582749 bugs of the front of his car and enjoy every minute that he is here today.
