Did I mention that we are jumping in near the end of the story? Pubic Fusion is part 11 of 12. This will likely feel like you are picking up a book and opening it somewhere other than the beginning, but just jump in. I promise it will all come together.
Bjinuz Braces
What on earth? What is that? A ridiculous name for one of the strangest feelings. After two years of hip surgeries for bilateral joint issues, dysplasia, and complications – nine surgeries in all – we had yet to solve my problems. Last June we did surgery number ten, a debridement of the pubic joint to address the osteitis pubis, but still, no resolution. A few months later the joint space was beginning to collapse in on itself so we finally did the last resort – Fusion of the Pubic Joint, aka Pubic ORIF, aka Bjinuz Braces. That was seven weeks ago today. It looks like this:
Why am I calling it Bjinuz Braces?
Pubic Fusion is being renamed Bjinuz Braces because it feels like brand new braces in/on my bjinuz. But really large, and the soreness doesn’t subside after a few days like it does with teeth. Plus, the name makes me laugh and not take the whole thing too seriously. The idea is to keep everything still while new bone (harvested from my right iliac crest, can you see it on the X-ray?) grows in the joint space. Until then, it feels like every move I make puts stress on the hardware, causing pain.
Fusion Frosting
Here’s the added prize…I’m allergic to the metal.
No joke.
From day one post-op I was itchy, and then about three weeks in I started breaking out in hives every day. I went for metal allergy testing and it turns out I am allergic to nickel, which comprises 14% of the parts inside me. I’ve always been that “special person” that gets the random weird side effect from a drug, or has something unexpected happen, but for real…do we need this, too? We are SO CLOSE to finally solving all of my problems and I get covered in tar, feathers, and funfetti frosting.
After getting over myself (I cried one day, first time ever through all of this), I just have to laugh at this every single day. I look like a spotted red monster and my bjinuz hurts but this has an end. Once the bones have fused we will take it all out and I can finally fly.
In the meantime, I’m embracing the challenge, counting the days, finding the opportunities this all presents, and congratulating my badass self for rising to a higher level of fortitude.
So there you have it – Bjinuz Braces. If you need a pubic fusion (very rare), get it, otherwise, I do not recommend for fun.
