Surgery #14 is complete! Easy peasy, the metal is out!
How We Do Surgery
What better way to end the seemingly endless surgery saga than to do it with your best friend? She is prepping for her #8 so we are true pros at this by now – unfortunately/fortunately. I’ve written about my approach to these surgeries countless times in this blog, but I feel like the essence doesn’t come through in words, at least I’m not eloquent enough to fully illustrate it. Because of this, I decided we ought to make a video. I was hoping to portray how absolutely silly we can be but I think we have evolved past that even, so what you’ll see here is two chill besties having a fairly regular day. Actually, the day is probably more relaxed than most since we both handed off our mom duties to our spouses and got to spend the whole day together alone.
Surgery #14
Beyond what you see in the video, the day went great. It started with a tiny boo boo – The nurse had me do a head to toe wipe down with Chlorhexidine wipes, which I am allergic to. I didn’t read the label and she hadn’t looked at my allergies, oopsie. But I quickly took a full shower and got it all off.
I had three surgeons for the procedure. Dr. Higuchi (urologist) to open, his job was to move and protect my bladder. Dr. Stoneback (ortho) to remove the hardware and do anything else that needed to be done, TBD when open. Dr. Greyson (plastics) to do a complex closure and repair the abdominal wall and tethering from the last surgery. Teamwork!
As far as I know, everything went great! We cannot do any more surgeries to the area so the bones will be what they will be at this point. There is still a lot of sclerotic bone but the only other fix for that is to remove it. I think I’d rather keep it and have some semblance of a pelvis than to have an enormous portion removed.
I believe we started just before 2pm and I was home for the night just after 8:30pm. So, compared to other surgeries, this one was a shorter one.
I was expecting a follow-up call from Dr. Stoneback to learn more about what he did, but no such luck so I’m posting this as is. I am sure he trusts that I am all good and will reach out to him if I need anything.
It is two days later now and I’m just hanging out at home, being slow. My lower abdomen is swollen deep inside so I’m a bit uncomfortable. Otherwise, it’s just a case of hurry up and wait.
I’ll share more as I learn more!
