Welcome to Day 3 of the Habits Reboot week. If you missed Days 1 and 2, please go back and start there. Today we will dig into the final two Weapons of Mass Distraction and accompanying reboot solutions. These two again come from Jay Shetty and are a detailed look at how we being our days and creating our perfect workspace. Are you ready to wake up and create your space today?
WMD #5 – Waking Up With Your Phone
Does your phone sleep in your bed with you? Is it the last thing you look at before going to sleep and first thing you look at in the mornings?
STOP THAT RIGHT NOW!
(I’m yelling at myself as much as I am you.)
This is completely ridiculous. We are not married to our devices and they do not need a place in our beds. Beginning each day with our phones is inviting negativity and noise into our days, letting news and notifications dictate the mood and tone for the rest of the day to be built upon. Instead, we should decide for ourselves what we want to feel like and focus on the things we planned the night before – the work we began on Day 1.
I began each day with my phone for years and then got over it…and then started it again after my last surgery since getting up to get my phone when I needed it was really hard. I kept it close by for safety. Legit, but also a terrible excuse after awhile. This is a difficult habit to kick but I am committing to doing it again, so you can, too! Maybe we need a Screentime Challenge Reboot?
Habits Reboot #5
Today we are going to kick our phones out of our beds, create proper bedtimes and wake up times for them, and create a new little space for them to sleep all night long BY THEMSELVES. Treat them like your babies and toddlers. They need boundaries and so do we.
I have a charging station set up in my bathroom for all of my devices. My phone is going there tonight and staying put all night. My beautiful analog Shinola clock is coming out of the nightstand drawer and going back onto the nightstand for the inevitable middle of the night wake ups, always leaving me wondering what time it is.
I’m committing to not saying good morning to my phone until I’m up to begin my early morning writing for the day, and even then it is only for purposes related to writing.
Your turn! Where will your phone sleep? What is its bedtime and wake up time? Do you have an alarm clock to take its place if you were using the phone as an alarm clock? No excuses, there’s no reason to sleep with a phone and begin the day with it. YOU DECIDE what input you want to begin the day with. Remember the evening planning you did two days ago? Wake up and get to THAT right away. Try it and see how much happier you feel.
WMD #6 – Visual Environment
Are you visually inspired by your environment? We talked about the impact sound has on our productivity and creativity, so now let’s look at the visual influence.
Go to your workspace and consider every element you see. This applies to every workspace – desk, cubicle, home office, high rise office, hospital, playground, car, gym, whatever! Of the elements that you have control over, are you inspired by what you see?
When we are visually stimulated in a positive way we are happier, calmer, and more creative and productive. Watch this video to learn more about the science behind beauty.
Habit Reboot #6 – Create Your Space
Today we are going to revamp our spaces to make them serve us best. What can you change in your spaces so they are more appealing and inspiring for you?
Do you like spaces like these?
For me, while I LOVE a lot of color, my desk and surrounding area is mostly blank and neutral colors. This is purposeful to facilitate photo editing – I don’t want colors in my environment interfering with my ability to accurately see and edit photos.
When I write, I am on my ipad so I could go anywhere, but I choose to park myself on my white bed, as blank as the page I begin with each day.
But, for when I’m in mom mode, my my car has rainbow disco lights in it and I carry Cotopaxi bags that have every color of the rainbow on them. Bright colors make me happy and get me in a mood for fun.
When I workout, my water bottles are my scenery, covered in motivational stickers from Redbubble. Here is my newest addition, in honor of eating toast:
Reworking your space doesn’t need to be a huge undertaking. Something as small as a sticker can make it perfect.
While I have a lot of visual appeal and purpose in my spaces, the improvements I need to make will come in the form of removing things. Aka decluttering so that everything is purposeful.
Your turn! What will you change in your space today? Is there something to remove? Add? Think outside the box, create your space, and make it yours!
